COLOUR HARMONY THROUGH COMPLIMENTARY COLOURS

 

I gained feedback suggesting the glasses shot would have benifited from being square

on instead of at an angle as I had originally included. I have taken the photo again

using this suggestion and found that it does in fact work better.

It was also suggested in this section that the image to show green and red, I.e. the

lollipops, was weak and needed attention. As I stated in the reflections page I hadn't

realised that the yellow in the picture took away from the colours actually trying to be

portrayed. I have changed this image using skittles as I wanted to keep to the same

sort of subject.

 

By using a black background, the red and green are emphasised and stand out more.

COLOUR HARMONY THROUGH SIMILAR COLOURS

The image with the vacuum and the mop showed purple as more blue. This was a

colour combination I struggled with and have struggled to find another image to

replace it. However again not wanting to stray away to a completely new subject to

shoot, I used mega blocks and found these to colours work well together.

 

I also took a more natural picture to illustrate this combination further. I personally

like the top image best for showing the colours but I like the below image for the

composition.

 

 

COLOUR CONTRAST THROUGH CONTRASTING COLOURS

As suggested for the tractor having more space around it to improve the composition.

I have done this and agree with my tutor, it works very well.

 

I have changed the image for green and purple giving it a new subject matter and

hopefully better execution.

 

 

I like this image. It shows the purple in focus showing it off more against the green.

 

The image taken for purple and orange has been removed as suggested. The image

wasn't one of my strongest and didn't sit well with the other images.

In this assignment I thought it would pretty simple, after all colour is everywhere. However when I started getting into it I started realising that colour actually plays a big part in the image and can change the effect. I found this assignment quite tricky and the colours are not as easy to find as I first thought

Colour harmony through complementary colours.

YELLOW AND PURPLE - These two colours work really well with each other. I chose to use the subject I did as I feel they are strong comparison to each other.

Balance in colour is that there is more slightly more yellow than there is purple

 

 

BLUE AND ORANGE - I like these two colours together the orange sets off the blue really well.

The balance between blue

Fairly equal

Although it looks at first glance that orange outweighs

blue.

RED AND GREEN- The green stands out more on this image but red and green for me have always been two colours that compliment each other well. They are a common combination.

RED AND PURPLE - I feel that these two colours clash with each other. Its not a combination I would normally put together.

BLUE AND GREEN - I like these colours together I think they work well and compliment each other nicely.

YELLOW AND ORANGE - Normally these two colours don’t work well together they are two similar. However in this image the two colours compliment each other well.

　

 

The balance is more orange to yellow but this works well as to much or equal amounts would be to much for the colours to work well together.
　

　
　
　








Colour contrast through contrasting colours

BLUE AND RED - I don’t think these two colours contrast much at all. I think they complement each other well.

　GREEN AND PURPLE - Again with purple and green they don’t really work well together on there own. I think if there were more colours mixed in they would work, but not on there own.

BLUE AND YELLOW - Again the colours in this image don’t contrast with each other as much as I thought they would. I actually feel they work compliment each other well.

GREEN AND ORANGE - I like these two colours together its got a natural feel to it.

Colour accent using any of the above　

　

　The orange buoys takes your attention in this image. The background might be a little distracting from the buoy, however it has a strong colour compared with the background that the attentions not taken for long.　 　

Your eyes are immediately drawn to the blue spade in the sand. All the background colours are similar and offer nothing to draw your eyes away from the spade. Having the bright blue in among all that brown you eyes wander but then return to the same spot.

Again the purple has the same effect as the spade and all the background colour offers nothing to draw your attention away.

Colours into tones in black and white

This image has a blue filter as you can see the bowl is almost white and the yellow sticks have blended in with the bowl.

This is the first image in colour

 This image has a green filter, the bowl is darker and the peppers a#have become brighter.

 This image is a straight black and white conversion with no filter I dont feel that there is any differences in the colours or changes other than greyscale.

 Red filter was applied to this image. The red pepper is alot brighter on this image it almost feels like it should be yellow.

 This image has a yellow filter applied. again the pepper is brighter but not as bright as with a red filter. I thought the cheese sticks would have some sort of effect on them but they appear to be the same as most other filters.

RESEARCH - Colour

Richard Heeps has created another book called mans ruin the imagery in this book is varied. Some is subtle colour and some is based around colour. I borrowed the book form the libray and found that I kept going back to it time and time again.

His "Dream in colour" section on his website house's some more (I found) exciting work, here are some examples. The drama in the second image is increadible and although its not colour as such, It is the use of the dark blue that gives it its appearence.


Brad Carlile Is a New York photographer who is quite opposite to Richard heeps in the fact that his work comes across abit over the top but having said that works really well.

Personally I (suprisingly) prefer Brads work. although it is over the top there is no doubt that there is imagination and vision in each of his images.

Exercise - Primary and secondary colours

 ORANGE - secondary colour I like the way it looks agaisnt the green. parts of the butterfly are to the colour wheel but i feel this is mainly like a burnt orange.

 BLUE - Primary colour. The little boys jacket is the colour i was looking for to match the colour wheel.

 YELLOW - Primary colour. This I feel matchs the colour wheel well it may be a little darker but not much.

 VIOLET - Secondary colour. I think some of the flowers match the wheel and some are slightly darker.

RED- Primary colour. This matchs perfect and agaisnt the green of the flowers leaves, it really stands out.

GREEN- Secondary colour. Probably the easiest to find and the hardest to shoot. This is because its all round us but there are so many different shades.

Exercise- Control the stregnth of a colour

 The colour of the red on the apple and the orange stand out alot more than the other images.
