CHANGES TO ELEMENTS OF DESIGN ASSIGNMENT 2

In the feedback I recieved for this assignment there were a few points brought up such as, some of my images were the same in my assignment as were in my blog for previous exercises. I have reviewed this issue and can see which images are used twice and am working on producing differnt images.

Also in the single point dominating, the feedback was that the footprints and the seaweed take the focus away from the football. After reviewing the image I to can now see the problem which was raised. I have therefore changed this image for one which is much cleaner and crisper.

This image brings a sence of mystery with it but more to the point the background is very undisturbed which really allows you to focus your attention on the helicopter.

I was also told about the horizon and foreground on a couple of images. This has helped me because now I look at the whole image whenever I am doing the final preperations on them. In light of this I have changed the horizon on "two points" and sorted the foreground on "diagonals"

The images I produced for the heading curves were not strong enough and "quite limited". Therefore I have produced to new images which I hope are stronger and give more compositional structure.

This image shows a strong curve its obvious and has a very definate shape.

Again this shows a strong curve but it leads the viewers eyes out to the horizon and around the bay.


I was told about the bottom image in the rhythm section, being "not needed" I have therefore removed this image from the assignment and left this section with the stronger top image.

Pattern was picked up on for the fact that the images were bordered on being textual more than pattern. I agree having reflected on these images and have hopefully changed them for the better.

Finally the last point I feel I need to adapt is the irregular shapes of the rocks in the sea. I have given them a tighter crop and I agree with my tutors comments and feel that this has benefited from this.





Research for assignment 2 - ELEMENTS OF DESIGN

I went for a beach theme for this assignment and to get some inspiration I searched google for some photographers work on the subject and came across some pretty amazing pictures. Tony Howell is a landscape photographer who has produced some amazing work along the coast of cornwall. I love the way he finds things to really draw your attention in to the photo, like this example of st micheals mt.

                                         

I also came across the digital photography school. There from australia and alot of there work is based around portrature and memories. I personally loved some of there work as this is the sort of thing I am interested in take this image The two girls playing in the water appeals to me and you can see just how much fun they are having.

Also, I like this image. The lighting and the waves have been captured perfectly (aren't you just waiting for that bloke to run away like a child near the water for the first time?)

These are two of the people I went back to most for inspiration on this assignment I love the way all the images work and tried to use these thoughts in my own work.

Real and implied triangles

In these six images, three are implied triangles and three are real triangles.

The two trees are real triangles from the base of the leaves to the tip of the leaves. The fact that its kept tidy helps define the triangle shape.

The firemen and the little boy create a triangle on this childrens ride.

 Again this shows a implied triangle, The two men create the outer points while the little boy creates the tip of the triangle.

 The wings of this bird are showing a triangle. Im not sure if this is implied or real, I would be inclined to go more towards implied.

 Real triangle in the climbing frame and implied with the man climbing the frame. I feel its a really good contrast between the two.

 Again this is real triangles shown by the childrens playground aparatus.

Implied lines

The way the breaer goes out to sea draws your eye into the image.

The footsteps coming towards you make you think about where that persons been or what they've been doing.

The rock line draws you to the colourful cliff face at the edge of the image.

Diagonals

There are four images below, two of them are implied diagonals created by putting the camera at an angle, and two are real diagonals. The images created by putting the camera at a diagonal are my preferance, this is because they give a good effect of depth. 

Horizontal and Vertical lines

Positioning a point

The point is in the middle on this image. I personally think it makes the image a bit bland and makes you wonder what is beyond the left hand edge of the frame.

 I like this image most out of all of them.It gives a clear image of all the surroundings and still draws your attention to the main rock out at sea.

This image is nice as the line of the sea draws you to the big rock, but the frame cuts the edge of the image and doesnt give you a clear image of what the rock is and the solitude its in.

Rhythm and patterns

I like the horse image and think it portraits rhythem well. the fact that the horse has just come through the water, leaving a ripple in its wake emphasises this.

 

The stones represents pattern. although irregular, there is a distinct pattern through the image.

Curves

 

 The river shows the movement and there is a slight curve at the end taking your eye the opposite way.

 

This image leads your eyes around the bay.

 

This is one I arranged one day at the beach as a bit of fun!

 

Again this takes your eye around the bay but is emphasised with the road.

For this assignment I have chosen to follow a beach theme and personally feel I have portrayed the images which were requested in a professional manor and I am happy with the results of my work.
　


Single point dominating the composition

I chose this image to demonstrate single point dominating the composition, as the background is clean and the football really stands out. I changed the image to black and white to make the football stand out more, therefore emphasizing the point I am trying to show.
　
　

　
　
　

　

Two Points

In this image the two points can be seen quite clearly, The rocks in the background and the fins in the foreground. This image has a sense of solitude about it but also tells a story about what the person who owns the fins is doing or about to do.

　

　

　

　

　

　

The image again shows a strong two point. The little boy acting as one and the father acting as the other.

I like this image as it shows father and son bonding and just how much fun the little boy is having.

This image shows 3 people with 2 body boards arranged in a triangle shape.
Unfortunately out of the 4 attempts at taking the photo the subjects were either out of line or were not looking at the camera. This was a typical stand back and wait for the moment photo. I knew what I wanted to achieve and wanted it to look as natural as possible, however in doing so, I haven’t achieved the final image I was looking for.
　
　
　A Combination of Vertical and Horizontal Lines
　
　The horizon of the sky against the sea acts as a horizontal line as does the waves breaking on the beach. The little boy is posed as a vertical.
Personally I feel this is my best shot in this assignment. I love the ambiance of the image and have turned it into a greyscale image to enhance this. The day itself was rainy and very over cast but still the boy wanted to go down to the water. With everything considered such as his coat with his hands inside his sleeves, the dull sky and slightly choppy waters, you can really feel the image and can return to it time and time again.

　
　
　
　
　
　
　
　
　
　DiagonalsFor this image I Turned my camera at an angle this gives the image an entirely new feel and allows you to see more in the photo.

The way the lighting and again the dull conditions of the day have made this image feel work really well together, I also grey scaled this image to

Both of these images show the same curves just at different angles.

Distinct, even if irregular, shapes

These are very distinct and clear shapes in the form of letters and then words.

Again the blocks in the sea are very distinct and in an irregular shape.

Rhythm

These two images again show the same type of rhythm, both are of a hovercraft
leaving the harbour.

On the top image the spray of the water shows fast movement and the direction of the waves created also indicate this.
On the bottom image the little boys hair has been blown in line with his face which shows the force of the down draft.
　

　
　
　
　

　PatternI took this as I liked the colours and patterns of the stones, not just as a group but as individuals to. Each stone has a different shape and size and together they make a interesting arrangement.
　
　

　

I turned this into a black and white image to emphasise the shapes.

I like the way the lines on the beach have formed and been left by the sea.
